Kalmar Arena will have a seating capacity of 12000 for football and 15000 for concerts.

The sound system will be integrated with the voice alarm, which is one of the first solutions of its kind in Sweden. The PA-system is made to meet the UEFA specifications.

By doing careful EASE simulations we have been able to meet a very high standard of voice quality, averaging well over 0.6 STI values, as well as over 100dB sound pressure for over 95% of the audience.

The main sound system will consist of 32 pcs Renkus-Heinz SGX 121 loudspeakers, which have the special treatment to withstand wind and rain. These speakers will be fed by a 100V system, from two amplifier rooms. Some might consider this an old fashion solution to use 100V feed. However, today with modern transformer technology (6 kg each) the sound quality is excellent, earlier shown in a similar installation at Frölundaborg ice hockey arena.

The amplifiers used are 10 pcs LAB Gruppen C16:4 light weight amplifiers, giving each speaker a feed of 400W max.

In order to have a smart control over the system we are using a MediaMatrix Nion system. The system can select via a touch screen eq , mute, levels etc for each section of the arena, which is important as the acoustic properties are changing very much depending on the amount of visitors.

All control and signal cables are sent to the two amplifier rooms by a fibre network, in order to avoid any kind of signal losses.

The central point of the system is a digital mixer, an Yamaha LS9, which is handling a signal sources including a disco system from Numark, wireless systems from Shure etc.

The sound system indoors is a Bosch Praesidio system, the first manufacturer fulfilling the new Voice evacuation standard – EN54.

This system is also distributed by a digital fibre optic cable system, with full alarm and control functions included. It is integrated with the main bowl system with priority, meaning that the Bosch system is in control over the main PA system, using that as a voice alarm as well.

In mid March next year the new arena will be ready for football, with the hope that Kalmar FF will reach the league top again.

Therefore, at the design of a sound system, it is important to use a good simulation data program. Here a model of the building is made with a computer program. By using a good simulation technician, different materials, shapes and speakers can be tested in the computer model and with good accuracy to real life, if the model is well designed for its purpose. The most common program used is EASE, a program we have used successfully with the State Mosque in Qatar, as well as many other similar projects.

The architect is often focused on his problems and targets, which are to design a beautiful mosque. He is not so often aware of the acoustic problems he might cause.
